Small linen Union Jack; In the very earliest days of the First World War, before the adoption of the Union Flag as the first national marking for British Military aircraft, small union flags were applied to the aircraft of No. 5 Squadron RFC. This example was initially fixed to the nacelle of Henry Farman aircraft No.801 c.22nd August 1914, and when this aircraft was wrecked 22 September 1914 the Union jack was removed and pasted to the fuselage of Avro 504 No 665, which force landed following an unsuccessful attack on a German observation balloon on 31st October 1914, the pilot, Captain, later Group Captain, Carmichael surviving. The joystick from this aircraft is also in the collection, item 72/A/1338. Heavily Soiled.

Length of rectangular profile timber with six holes (for steel bracket) one end and turned along its length finishing in a ball shaped hand grip the other. Varnished overall.

Soft brown leather trousers with woollen fabric lining. Waistband fastening with three vertical buttons to which a broad front flap fastens with four horizontal buttons. Two pairs of buttons on front sides for braces and a pair in the centre of the rear hem. Adjustment strap and buckle across rear waist. Belt retaining loops at either front side. Buckled straps at the ankles.

Soft, brown leather trousers with wool lining. Front cut-away from sides to crotch and are held up by an integral half belt with single pinned buckle. Slit openings in the lower legs are closed via a series of three press studs.

Black Melton jacket with dark blue fall collar, shoulder boards, two inset flap and button breast pockets, false pointed cuffs, buttoned from neck to waist with five buttons concealed in fly and clasped waist. Front decorated with brown lace from shoulders to waist, the lace looping round the pocket flaps and then continuing to the waist and then round to the rear.
