Straight bladed sword with scabbard. Sword - the steel, spear point blade etched with panels of foliate decoration, Royal Arms, crowned GRV cypher and scrolls on a grey ground. The outer edge of the blade bearing a panel etched Capt; D.F. LEWIS. D.S.O. ROYAL FLYING CORPS 1st Jan 1915) Proof mark at forte, but no manufacturer's details. The large, half basket guard in plated white metal decorated with pierced scrollwork and a crowned Royal cypher GVR. With a slot for a sword knot. Plain oval pommel with integral back strap and dark grey "shark skin" grip bound in silver wire. Scabbard - brown leather with white metal throat, short leather strap to attach to sword frog and leather drag.

Circular, bronze, partly silvered with enamel. Obverse - Within a silver laurel wreath a medallion of a female head in left profile within a blue enamel ring lettered REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE 1870 Reverse - Within a silver laurel wreath a medallion lettered VALEUR ET DISCIPLINE within a plain blue ring. The whole hinged to a bronze suspender in the form of a trophy of arms comprising crossed cannon barrels, an anchor, sword, axe and cuirass with a plain ring. Ribbon - yellow with green edges.

Large, jointed D ring, the curved arm terminating in a flattened tongue pierced with a hole; the straight element cleft at the end opposite to the hinge to allow the flattened tongue to pass through it. The straight arm passes through the reinforced holes round the mouth of the kit bag and a padlock passes through the hole. The D part acts as a carrying handle.
