Dark Adaptation Goggles

It can take over 20 minutes for the human eye to adapt to the dark. Night fighter crews would wear these goggles before missions to help acclimatise their vision.

Air Raid Protection First Aid Box

During the Second World War Air Raid Protection (ARP) Wardens kept first aid boxes at their posts to provide immediate medical assistance following an enemy attack. These boxes contained supplies such as bandages and dressings and a first aid handbook.

Full and Mess Dress Cap of an Officer

Although it was replaced by the Full Dress helmet in 1921, this style of cap was retained for mess dress until 1934 when the standard officer's cap was substituted in its place.

Field Service Cap of Other Ranks

A major change to the Other Ranks uniform took place in 1936. Shirts, ties and open necked jackets replaced tunics that closed to the neck.

Hawker Hurricane Mark IIc

The Hawker Hurricane Mk I entered service in 1937 as the RAF's first eight-gun monoplane. During the Battle of Britain, Hurricanes shot down approximately 60% of enemy aircraft – more than all the other air and ground defences combined.
