Air Force Department Fire Service Helmet

The Air Force Department Fire Service provided fire protection on RAF sites. It used both Air Force and civilian personnel. The black colour identified the wearer as a standard firefighter.

To Public Shelters Sign

In 1938, when war seemed inevitable, local authorities were required to provide public shelters in case of enemy bombing. Signs such as this, a rare survivor, guided the public to their nearest shelter.

Swagger Stick of Other Ranks

The swagger stick was originally carried by non-commissioned ranks as part of their walking out (off-duty) uniform. Carrying the stick was designed to give an air of respectability and authority, hence use of the term swagger. The practice was discontinued in the RAF between the First and Second World Wars.

Avro Anson Mark I

The first RAF aircraft to feature a retractable undercarriage, the Avro Anson entered service with No. 48 Squadron, Coastal Command, in 1936. Anson Mk Is escorted British shipping in the North Sea and English Channel during the Battle of Britain.

Souvenir Badge of the Falklands Conflict

The British overseas territory of the Falkland Islands was invaded by Argentine forces on 2 April 1982. A Royal Navy task force was despatched with ground troops to retake the Islands and the Argentine surrender was accepted on 14 June. The RAF executed five long-range bombing operations against Stanley airfield and anti-aircraft installations, operating from Ascension Island. Avro Vulcan XM598, on display in the Cold War exhibition, was one of the aircraft designated for these operations.

The flying clothing worn by RAF winchmen equipped them for rescue operations over the sea and in the mountains, where they frequently had to be lowered by cable from a hovering helicopter.
