Rectangular green, black and red paper banknote. Face side: On the background there is an ornamental vignette, on its left and right sides – denomination 1 MARK. Beneath it – issuer information. Over it there are gothic inscriptions in 4 lines: DARLEHNSKASSENSCHEIN / EIN MARK / BERLIN, DEN 12. AUGUST 1914 / REICHSSCHULDENVERWALTUNG. Beneath it – signatures. In the right upper corner – there is red serial number. In the left bottom corner – relief stamping of Reichsschuldenverwaltung, in the right bottom corner – red stamping of Reichsschuldenverwaltung. Back side: In the centre of the background – coat of arms of German Empire and ornamental pattern, to the left and to the right – denomination 1. Semicircular inscriptions – DARLEHNSKASSENSCHEIN (above), EIN MARK (beneath). To the left and to the right – denomination: 1 MARK 1. Background with ornament: 1 MARK. Crisp.

Single-breasted, blue cotton unlined jacket with five black composition buttons, stand - rise and fall - collar and two open, patch pockets in front skirts. The back edge of the cuffs slit for a few inches and provided with a button to close.

Straight bladed sword with scabbard. Sword - the steel, spear point blade etched with panels of foliate decoration, Royal Arms, crowned GRV cypher and scrolls on a grey ground. The outer edge of the blade bearing a panel lettered To Captain D.S. LEWIS. D.S.O. ROYAL FLYING CORPS (From his brother officers. Jan. 1915) Manufacturer's details and proof mark at forte. The large, half basket guard in plated white metal decorated with pierced scrollwork and a crowned Royal cypher GVR. With a slot for a sword knot. Plain oval pommel with integral back strap and dark grey "shark skin" grip bound in silver wire. Sword knot brown leather. Scabbard - brown leather with white metal throat, short leather strap to attach to sword frog and leather drag.
