RAF Mark VI Cable Cutter for Barrage Balloon Wire

This wing-mounted cable cutter was powered by a small explosive charge and was intended to cut barrage balloon wires if an aircraft became entangled in them. The balloon cable would run into the notch, triggering the charge, which released a sharp blade like a chisel to sever the cable.

A decade after his musical explorations with singer Ian Dury’s band Kilburn and the High Roads, painter Humphrey Ocean was commissioned by the RAF Museum to represent the English Electric Lightning F6 aircraft at RAF Binbrook just before its withdrawal from service.

Royal Aircraft Factory BE2b (Replica)

The BE2b was a very stable aircraft. On 26 April 1915, in the First World War, 2nd Lt William Barnard Rhodes-Moorhouse attacked Courtrai Railway Station, Cambrai, Northern France flying BE2b No. 687. Dropping a 100lb bomb he was fatally wounded by ground fire but managed to fly home, and was awarded the first Victoria Cross for an aerial action.

Iraq Levies Klaw

In 1921 the RAF took over control of all military forces in Iraq which included the Iraqi Levies. They initially replaced British and Indian troops stationed in the country but, as the newly-formed Iraqi Army expanded, the Levies were redeployed to defend RAF Stations.
