Ethel Gabain produced two Air Transport Auxiliary (ATA) subjects for her Official War Artist commission about ‘women doing men’s work in wartime’. In this work she represents female pilots departing from Hatfield aerodrome in a Tiger Moth.

Rolls-Royce Merlin XX

Although it was famous for powering Spitfires and Hurricanes, the Merlin was also used to power many bomber aircraft. The Merlin XX, fitted to the much larger Halifaxes and Lancasters, had a two-speed supercharger which improved performance at high altitude.

The first protective helmet to have integrated communications, the Mk 2 series had a weighted bar which would force the visor down to protect the face in the event of a cockpit ejection.
